Derbyshire Constabulary has just signed a new contract with security firm Advance Monitoring Solutions, agreeing to provide them with a police radio.

This means that if officers witness a crime taking place in the Derbyshire Dales, they can instantly contact the AMS CCTV monitoring centre in Barlborough and ask staff to direct cameras at the incident, giving the best possible recording for evidence. Previously, officers would have to contact the force control room, who would then ring AMS to relay the message.

It is anticipated that by providing the firm with a police radio, valuable time will be saved when trying to capture CCTV evidence.Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnership, which owns the cameras, is supporting the new contract.

Councillor Lewis Rose OBE, Chairman of the Community Safety Partnership and Leader of Derbyshire Dales District Council, said:

“We know from listening to local people that feeling safe in their communities is a priority for them, and this is a forward-thinking initiative that will make our CCTV monitoring even more effective."

Assistant Chief Constable Dee Collins said:

“This is the first time a monitoring firm has had a police radio in Derbyshire. Although crime in the Dales is very low, we hope that by providing AMS with a radio, it will greatly improve the quality of any evidence we gather from CCTV cameras and in turn, help us secure convictions at court. Staff at Advance Monitoring Solutions are currently receiving additional training and we expect the new system to be in place before the end of the year.”

Advance Monitoring Solutions had their biggest exhibition stand ever at this year's Local Government Conference at Bournemouth. Local government delegates found AMS' message right on cue this year: "CCTV the unrecognised revenue stream". The recently launched Public Private Partnership (PPP) scheme at Breckland was a timely case study which showed how commercial 'sharing' of council networked CCTV systems can be a boost to council resources.

In addition to revealing the benefits of promoting CCTV resource sharing, AMS demonstrated the new features of Medusa II, their bespoke video monitoring and management system.

Such was the success of the exhibition, that AMS is looking forward to the next annual conference. Book your diary date now: 28-30 June 2011 at Birmingham ICC.

A multi –million-pound order to supply a state-of-the-art wireless CCTV system to Breckland District Council (BDC) was secured in June 2009 by AMS.

The 10 year Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract breaks new ground in the industry by using the latest technology to enable instant access to images by authorised partners. It is also extremely flexible, enabling both local businesses and households to take advantage of the scheme.

AMS are utilising their proprietary software, Medusa, which enables the efficient processing of camera outputs, coupled with wireless technology for transmission and internet access. The exclusive nature of the options offered by the AMS system, was a significant factor in winning the contract. AMS already operates successful wireless CCTV monitoring solutions for local authorities across several counties.

“We specifically opted for a system that is extremely flexible and can be easily amended or upgraded in future years,” said Stephen Askew, Executive member for Communities. “We also made the decision to enter into a commercial partnership arrangement with AMS to help reduce the overall cost to residents of running the system. Businesses, individuals and home-owners will be able to buy in to the scheme and have their own security systems, such as intruder or fire alarms, monitored by the BDC Control Room”.

Andy Haughton, Head of Business Development at AMS said: “I am delighted that Breckland District Council has selected AMS to be their partner in this exciting joint venture. We have been impressed with the Council’s foresight in choosing such an advanced solution to their CCTV requirements, a choice that has given them great potential. Utilising the latest technology will bring efficiencies and flexibility to public space surveillance systems in ways not previously seen within the industry.”

Once the new control room and camera infrastructure is in place, the key element of the new partnership will be to secure other users of the camera network. Schools, retailers, car parks, factories, retail areas and even residences comprise just some of the potential applications for what is set to be a very high quality service.

The new system adopts wireless technology to collect images that will be transmitted digitally to local storage devices. From here they will be accessible at remote locations by any number of authorised users, including the BDC Control Room and the local police force. High-specification cameras with powerful magnification are designed to deliver images day and night, in all weather conditions. The cameras also have the ability to be programmed to sense and track movement, and audio response facilities can be mounted in locations that require more thorough monitoring.

The new Brecklands CCTV system will be installed in all five Breckland market towns, with an additional four ‘roving cameras’ to provide a flexible and timely response to problems in specific problem areas. Work on the scheme is already underway, commencing with a survey to determine the optimum locations for the wireless equipment.
